URBANA (Ohio) – Down 7-0 after two innings, the West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team rallied to down the Urbana Blue Knights by a 12-11 score in game one of their Mountain East Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
The 'Cats used that momentum in game two for their best offensive showing of the year as they beat Urbana by a 19-9 score.
The two wins gave the baseball team a 12-14 record overall and a 4-8 MEC mark.
Down by the 7-0 score, Wesleyan managed to get three runs back in the top of the fourth on a one-run double by Michael Logsdon (pictured), a one-run single by Nick Bader and a one-run double by Antonio Vega.
That made it a 7-3 game, but Urbana scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-3 advantage.
Alex Skinner hit a grand slam home run in the top of the sixth inning to bring Wesleyan to within four, at 11-7.
Wesleyan used a five-run seventh inning to get the win.
Wesleyan had 12 hits with Logsdon leading the way with three.
Bobby Ornes was one of five pitchers used and earned the win. He tossed one scoreless inning of relief and allowed two hits while fanning one.
Chris Metrick earned the save as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
In the second game, Logsdon and Dominic Castello each had a RBI in the top of the first to give Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
Urbana scored twice in the bottom of the first to make it a 2-2 game.
Wesleyan erupted for eight runs in the top of the second to take a commanding 10-2 lead.
Wesleyan pushed across four runs in the top of the third as Kerns had a one-run double, Castello had a one-run single, Bader had a one-run single and Vega had a one-run single to account for the scoring.
That gave Wesleyan a 14-2 lead.
Urbana scored twice in the bottom of the third to make it a 14-4 game.
Wesleyan scored four more in the top of the fifth when Lynn hit a two-run home run, Hunter Mann had a ground out RBI and Vega scored on an error.
That extended Wesleyan's lead to 18-4.
Urbana scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seven to trim the Wesleyan lead to 12, at 18-6.
Kerns hit a sacrifice fly that scored Koon in the top of the eighth for Wesleyan's 19th run.
Urbana wrapped up the scoring with a three-run home in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Logsdon and Vega each had four hits in the victory.
Brandon Stratton earned the win.
He started the game and went five innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits while walking four.
Wesleyan will return to action this Saturday when they travel to Charleston for a league doubleheader with the Golden Eagles.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
