Baseball 'Cats Fall Twice to Findlay in Doubleheader

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team came oh so close to their first victory of the year in their first game of a doubleheader with Findlay (Ohio) today during their spring break tour of Florida.

The Bobcats lost the opener in extra innings by a 4-3 score after leading by a 3-0 count going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Findlay carried the momentum of game one into game two and downed the Bobcats by a 6-0 score.

In game one, Wesleyan scored first in the top of the second inning when Travis Renner crossed home when Wyatt Adkins' grounder was thrown away by Findlay.

Wesleyan made it a 2-0 game in the top of the third when Antonio Vega scored on a sacrifice fly hit by John Koon to centerfield

Kolby Wolf hit a home run over the left field fence in the top of the sixth inning to treat Wesleyan to a 3-0 lead.

The Bobcat defense faltered in the last three innings of the game.

Findlay scored an unearned run in the sixth and two unearned runs in the seventh to deadlock the game at 3-3.

A throwing error by Wesleyan in the bottom of the eighth inning on a fielder's choice allowed the winning run to score.

Wesleyan committed five errors in the loss as all four of Findlay's runs were unearned.

The Bobcats mustered just three hits -- Wolf's home run, a double by Koon and a single by James Fraser.

Freshman Alex Wall started the game for Wesleyan and gave up one unearned run on just two hits while walking only one and striking out nine in a solid performance

Jake Bishop pitched the eighth and suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run on two hits.

In game two, Wesleyan collected seven hits, all singles, but couldn't push a run across.

Wesleyan's best chance to score was in the fourth inning when they put runners at second and third with two outs.

Findlay scored one in the top of the first and two more in the second for a 3-0 lead.

They put the game away with a run in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Vega had the only multi-hit game as he collected two hits.

Griffin Roe started the game for Wesleyan and suffered the loss. He went five innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits while striking out six.

Zach Henderson pitched the final two innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits.

With the sweep, Findlay improved to 6-0 on the season.

Wesleyan dropped to 0-5.

The Bobcats will be back at it Tuesday as they play the University of Mary at 1:15 p.m.
