Wesleyan Beats FSU, Falls to Shepherd in MEC Tournament

BECKLEY – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team will play on day four of the Mountain East Conference Tournament after going 1-1 today at Beckley's Epling Stadium.

The Bobcats defeated Fairmont State this afternoon in a winner's bracket game, 12-7, and then had to come right back to the field and play Shepherd in the winner's bracket finals contest where they dropped an 11-5 decision.

They will now play Sunday in the loser's bracket finals against the University of Charleston at 10 a.m. The winner of that game will play Shepherd at 1 p.m. Wesleyan or Charleston will have to beat Shepherd twice for the MEC title.

It was the same old story for the Bobcats against Fairmont State – fall behind early and rally for the win.

Wesleyan trailed by a 6-1 score after three innings of play.

The Bobcats' lone run duriing that time was in the top of the third when Austin Keene singled home James Fraser.

Wesleyan turned the tide of the game around in the top of the fourth inning when they scored seven runs.

Wyatt Adkins hit a three-run double down the left field line, Greg Smith smacked a one-run double, Ryan Kiser nailed a two-run single to left field and Antonio Vega had a one-run single up the middle to account for the scoring.

That gave Wesleyan an 8-6 lead.

Fairmont State scored one in the bottom of fifth to make it an 8-7 game.

Wesleyan added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

Alex Skinner scored on a wild pitch and Adkins hit a three-run double down the left side.

Adkins ended the game with six runs-batted-in.

Wesleyan had 12 hits with Smith getting three while Kiser, Eric Forbrick and Adkins each getting two apiece.

Hunter Rotarius (pictured) started the game and went four innings.

Jake Bishop earned the win pitching five innings of scoreless relief. He upped his record to 4-6 after pitching five scoreless innings allowing three hits while fanning three.

In their game against Shepherd, the Rams struck first with three runs in the top of the first.

Wesleyan made it a 3-1 contest when Keene scored on a ground out hit by Vega.

The Bobcats deadlocked the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Forbrick scored on an error and Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Vega for the pair of runs.

It went downhill for Wesleyan after that as Shepherd scored three times in the sixth and five times in the seventh for an 11-3 advantage.

Forbrick tripled home John Koon in the bottom of the eighth to make it an 11-4 game.

Wesleyan ended the scoring in the ninth when Skinner scored on a fielder's choice.

Forbrick had two of Wesleyan's seven hits.

Griffin Roe (2-4) suffered the loss as he pitched five innings of relief.

The split left Randy Tenney and his team a 23-29 record heading into tomorrow's action.
