BUCKHANNON – Head coach Del Smith's West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats are hoping for a return to the win column this weekend, as they host the surging UVa.-Wise Cavaliers in a homecoming match-up at Cebe Ross Field.
The Mountain East Conference contest will kick-off at 1 p.m.
UVa.-Wise is currently 4-2 overall and 4-2 in the MEC and is coming off a 51-41 shootout win over Urbana.
It was the Cavaliers' highest point-total in the last six years.
Wesleyan is in a three-team log jam for fifth place in the Mountain East Conference with both Urbana and West Virginia State. All three teams are currently 2-3 in the league, and a win by the Bobcats would get them back to .500 and firmly in the upper division of the Mountain East.
In holding the Charleston offense to only 15 points last weekend, the Wesleyan defense continues to post solid performances on the board. Linebacker Brandon Grayson continues to lead the league in two major categories; tackles with 61 total (10.2 tpg), and three fumble recoveries.
Wesleyan's special teams have scored four touchdowns, and have done so in four different ways; a kickoff return, a punt return, a blocked punt, and a fake punt. This has accounted for four of the team's 12 touchdowns to date.
Despite missing last week with an injury, Bobcat return specialist Jujuan Linzy continues to lead the league in both kickoff returns and punt returns.
Wide Receiver Kenny Lewis Jr. has become a critical target for WVWC quarterbacks, and currently has 21 catches for 243 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Kaian Duverger is the leading UVa..-Wise receivers with 24 catches for 329 yards, while Jarome Johnson is their top ball carrier with 258 yards on 47 carries. The top Cavalier tackler is Ed Kargbo with 45 tackles.
Wesleyan has defeated UVa.-Wise all four years of MEC competition, including a 35-10 win over the Cavaliers last year at UVa.-Wise.
Only two games separate the middle seven teams in the MEC standings. This week's games will be key for many teams as a shakeup in the middle group is likely.
