West Liberty bombs sink Bobcats

WEST LIBERTY -- West Liberty remained undefeated Monday night, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan 111-81 in MEC men's basketball action. While the Bobcats were able to hold the Hilltoppers well below their 124.7 points per game average, the perennial MEC power was able to pull a solid victory.

Coach Jack Meriwether's Wesleyan squad played the 'Toppers close early on, and with 4:33 remaining in the first half, the margin was a manageable six at 39-33. But West Liberty caught fire, drilling home 24 points in the last four minutes of the half to take a 63-38 lead to the locker room.

Nick Brooks led the Bobcats with 21 points. Fred Brondsted scored 15, and Luke Layhew 12 and a team high nine rebounds. Aaron Ariri added seven rebounds, and Kevin Kangni a team high three steals.

Evan French came off the bench to nail seven three-pointers and post a team high 21 points for West Liberty. The smooth shooting 'Toppers hit on 22 shots beyond the arc.

Wesleyan falls to 0-4 with the loss, while West Liberty improves to 5-0.

The Bobcats are back in action this weekend, traveling north to play in Gannon University's Gary Miller Classic. They open play in the tourney Friday night against the host Gannon squad.
