Golf Teams off to Strong Start at MEC Championships

DANIELS – Head Coach J.D. Lamm's West Virginia Wesleyan's women's golf team are sitting in third place after day one on Monday of the Mountain East Conference Championships with a score of 353. 

The event is being contested at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W. Va.

Freshman Kylie Day led the Lady Bobcat scorecard, firing an opening round 79. She is sitting in second place individually in the 42-player field.

Day was complemented by teammates Sandra Brink (12th with an 88), Whitney Milhoan (17th, 91), Beverly Toothman (23rd, 95) and Becca Davis (24th, 96). 

Notre Dame leads the team scoring with 329. Wesleyan is five strokes behind current runner-up Charleston, 350-355. 

On the men's side, the Bobcats fired a team score of 310, just 13 strokes behind team leader Charleston in a tightly packed leader board.

Shepherd is second with 303, West Liberty third at 308, and the Bobcats are tied with Concord for the fourth position.

Freshman Colin Chapman shot a team leading 74, placing him sixth in the 55-player field.

Nicholas Casingal is sitting in 11th with a day one 76, and was follwed by teammates Nick West (20th, 79), Zach Chapman (30th, 81) and James Snavely (45th, 85).

Teams return to the course Tuesday for Round Two. The women's competition tees off at 8 a.m. while the first men's group hits the tee at noon.
