Men's Tennis Team Off to Solid Start at ITA Regionals

ERIE (Pa.) -- The West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team advanced three players into the round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Regional here Friday afternoon.

Lukas Laipold, Ramon Rodriguez, and Maycon Santos Dias all will play in the second round of singles after claiming wins in the main draw.

Laipold and Santos Dais each won in straight sets while Rodriguez rallied from a set down to win 10-6 in a super tiebreaker against Shepherd's Carter Davis.

Bobcat sophomore Alexander Lyudinovskiy just missed going into the next round with his teammates, but came up on the short end of a 2-6, 7-6 (7), 10-5 decision to West Chester's Norman Patton. Lyudinovskiy held two match points in the second set tie breaker before falling.

"Overall, we had a solid day," said head coach Marc Walters. "We had a couple of close calls, but in this format and this building, it's a bit of a crapshoot and sometimes you are just happy to get through regardless of the level."

All four Bobcat doubles teams won a first round match, but only the tandem of Thomas McIntosh and Santos Dias made it to tomorrow's semifinals.

They will play will face the top seeded team from Mercyhurst at 10 a.m.

In the B draw singles, McIntosh, Yonas Gebre, Anthony Rames, and Harry Simaioforidis all remain alive into the round of 16
