Tennis 'Cats Continue Play at ITA Regionals

ERIE (Pa.) – West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis players Lukas Laipold and Ramon Rodriguez both fell in the quarter-finals today at the ITA Regionals after winning round 16 matches.

Rodriguez Upset Bluefield's Nacho Pulido 6-2 6-1 before falling to top-seeded Vitor Albanese of Edinboro (Pa.), 6-4 6-2.

Laipold lost a heartbreaking eight match points before losing 6-1 1-6 (11-13) to Mercyhurst's Ruri Fraser. Laipold held a 9-3 lead in the super tiebreak, but the Laker freshman staved off elimination to advance to Sunday's semi-finals.

The Bobcats had better luck in the B draw, where they rolled to take three of the four semi-final spots for Sunday's play. 

Harry Simaioforidis fought off two match points in the second set to rally for a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6 victory over top-seeded Luka Veselicof Mercyhurst.

He also beat Fairmont State's Dylan Early in the round of 16, 6-2 6-4. 

Simaioforidis will play teammate Yonas Gebre who won matches against Fairmont State's Matias Higueres and teammate Anthony Rames in straight sets by identical 6-1, 6-4 scores.

Thomas McIntosh joins them in the semifinals after straight set wins over Edinboro's Thomas McCoy and Charleston's Jason Prince. McIntosh will play Arsleynov Skylarov of Mercyhurst in the other semifinal.

Sunday will wrap up play in the ITA Atlantic Regional.
