Buckhannon, WV -- The West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team will host seven duals this season among their 20 dates., Key home contests include matches with rival Fairmont State, nationally ranked Bluefield State, and Division I California Riverside at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Head coach Marc Walters' crew will face no fewer than five team that held national rankings last season, and another five that were in the top 60 at one point of the year. Nationally ranked Mount Olive, Belmont Abbey, Lenoir-Rhyne, Roberts Wesleyan, and Division I Longwood bolster a schedule which includes two trips into the Carolinas.
Atlantic region rivals Edinboro, West Chester, and Bluefield State compliment Mountain East conference foes Fairmont State, West Liberty, Shepherd, and Charleston as the Bobcats seek an 11th consecutive NCAA berth.
All seven of these schools hold a spot in the top 10 of the ITA Atlantic team rankings heading into spring. Wesleyan is currently rated at 2nd in the poll, behind Bluefield State and just ahead of PSAC members Mercyhurst and Edinboro.
"It is a challenging slate, no doubt," said Walters, entering his 6th season at the helm with a 588-302 career coaching record.
"We are going to have our hands full in February and early March, which I hope will toughen us for our conference run," added Walters . "Depth and experience should be a strength for us, and as long as we stay healthy and keep focused, we should be competitive."
"Both Ramon and Ferran have been part of 3 conference titles in three years, so they have a good base to lead from," noted Walters of his seniors.
The Bobcats open 2018 with the Charleston Invitational on February 9-10, and then start dual play with road matches against #41 Chowan (NC) and Mount Olive (NC) on February 24-25.
