SALEM, Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team are your 2017 Mountain East Conference Post-Season Tournament Champions!
It took two games today, but the Lady Bobcats prevailed as they can now add tournament champion to their resume along with MEC regular-season champion.
Wesleyan dropped a 3-0 decision in eight innings to UVa.-Wise in the first outing today, but turned the tables on UVa.-Wise in the deciding 'if' game by that same 3-0 score.
Game one was a true pitching duel between Wesleyan's Hannah Vet and UVa.-Wise's Taylor Brandts.
Both pitchers took shutouts into the eighth inning.
Uva.-Wise broke the scoreless tie in the top of the eighth as Olivia Cleary hit a two-run double and Shannon Bennett grounded out for an RBI.
Wesleyan went down in order in the bottom of the eighth as they were unable to mount a comeback.
Vet (22-3) tossed all eight innings and allowed three earned runs on eight hits.
In game two, Wesleyan scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Jessica Rodriguez hit a two-run single to center that scored Gore and Pogue and Waggoner hit a one-run single that plated Rodriguez.
Senior Sayaka Foley took over from there in the circle.
She scattered four hits the rest of the way as the Cavaliers never put a runner in scoring position.
Foley improved her record to 17-3 as she didn't walk a batter and struck out 10.
Morgan Bruce and Waggoner each had two hits for the Lady Bobcats.
The split left Wesleyan with a 44-7 record overall.
The Lady 'Cats will now wait until Monday when they find out where and who they play in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.
