BUCKHANNON – The seventh-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan softball team used the long ball to defeat the University of Charleston here today in the second game of the NCAA DII Atlantic Region Double Elimination Tournament.
The win propelled them into the winner's bracket finals against Kutztown who was a 2-1 winner earlier in the day over Bloomsburg.
Following a two-hour delay after dodging afternoon raindrops, Waddell broke the ice with a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the first.
Waggoner followed with her home run in the bottom of the second smacking one over the right center field to give Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
Wesleyan upped their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third when Olivia Gore doubled off the right field wall to score Waddell.
The Lady Bobcats wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jessica Rodriguez crushed a ball over the left field fence for a two-run home run that scored Waddell.
Wesleyan collected five hits with Waddell having the lone multi-hit game with two.
Hannah Vet pitched a complete-game four-hitter as she improved her record to 23-3.
She walked two and struck out four.
Wesleyan and Kutztown will play tomorrow at 10 am with Kutztown being the home team as they won a prior coin flip.
Charleston and Bloomsburg will play an elimination game at 12:30 p.m.
