ERIE (Pa.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats ran into a very good team today as they traveled north for a non-conference game with the Mercyhurst (Pa.) Lakers.
The one-loss Lakers, ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region, downed the Lady Bobcats by an 81-55 score.
It was a rough start for the Lady Bobcats as they went down early by an 11-0 score.
Lana Long finally put Wesleyan on the scoreboard with a free throw with 5:14 left in the first half.
A Susan Meyer lay-up ended the scoring in the first quarter and put Wesleyan down by a 23-12 score heading into the second quarter.
Mercyhurst doubled their lead in the second quarter as they took a 43-22 advantage in the break.
Mercyhurst closed the quarter on an 18-8 run as they took a 63-37 lead into the final quarter.
Wesleyan battled Mercyhurst to an even fourth-quarter as both teams scored 18 points.
Stewart scored a team-high 14 points while Vandertoolen had nine.
Wesleyan shot just 34.6 percent from the floor hitting on 18 of their 52 field goal attempts.
The loss dropped the Lady Bobcats to 3-4 overall.
They will idle the rest of the calendar year and will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 3 whey they travel to Urbana for a Mountain East Conference lead.
That game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
