INDIANA (Pa.) -- Coach Vicky Bullett's Wesleyan women brought out the lock down defense Sunday afternoon, defeating Mansfield 58-43 in the PSAC/MEC Challenge. The Lady Bobcats held MU to only 11 field goals and 29% shooting from the field (11-of-38).
Mansfield utilized an 8-0 run at the end of the first quarter to snag an 11-10 lead at the first break. Wesleyan responed with a strong second quarter and never looked back. They held a 27-22 lead at the half, and 45-35 after three quarters. Mansfield did not score a field goal in the game's last five minutes.
Tyra Hughes led the Wesleyan offense with 16 points, and was complemented by Stacy Remer with 14 and Mari Stewart 13. Stewart and Lana Long both tied with a team high eight rebounds, while Remer added seven. MyKenzie Martin recorded a team high three assists.
Wesleyan's defense forced 30 Mansfield turnovers. Bullett's squad won the turnover margin handily 14-30, while WVWC also struggled from the field, shooting 34.8%.
Mountain East Conference play opens next Saturday for the Bobcats. They will host Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
