Women Lose Defensive Tussle at Virginia-Wise

WISE, VA -- After producing their best shooting performance of the season in Saturday's win at Fairmont, Coach Vicky Bullett's squad went cold Wednesday night, falling at Virginia-Wise 54-47. The Lady Bobcats shot 29.9% from the field against the Cavaliers (20-of-67).

Wesleyan kept it close throughout, primarily with a ball-hawking defense the forced 22 Wise turnovers. The Cavaliers led 25-21 at the half, and maintained a 39-31 lead after three periods.  Wesleyan responded with a strong run in the fourth quarter, and the contest was tied at 45-45 with only 2:50 remaining. Unfortunately for the Bobcat faithful, Wise made the key plays late, finishing the game with a 9-2 run.

Mari Stewart led the Bobcat scoring with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Alexa Szelong added 10 points.  Stacy Remer added eitght points and Tyra Hughes seven.

Hanna Oliver of Wise led all scroers with 12 points. The Cavaliers won the rebounding battle 52-39, with 19 of their boards coming off the offensive glass.

Wesleyan falls to 4-3 with the loss, and 3-2 in the Mountain East Conference. Virginia-Wise improves to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the MEC.

Coach Bullett's squad is back in action this Saturday, hosting Concord at 2:00.
