LBC Earns 1-0 Win Over Shepherd in MEC Semifinals

BUCKHANON – The No. 19 West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats have earned a berth into the Mountain East Confernece championship game after a 1-0 semifinal victory over the visiting Shepherd Rams today at Culpepper Stadium.

Wesleyan will host the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at against Notre Dame College.

Notre Dame defeated Concord in the other semifinal contest today by a 2-0 score.

The two teams split their season series with the home team winning both times.

In today's game, Wesleyan started sluggish as Shepherd control the action through the 15 minutes of action.

Play balanced out the rest of the half but neither team could score as they went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

The lone goal of the game came in the 61st minute.

Kelsie Hibbs took a shot that went off the crossbar and bounced back to Audrey Barber (pictured) who drilled home the shot from about 10 yards outs past Shepherd keeper Christi LaBella.

Shepherd came within inches of tying the game in the 77th minute.

Wesleyan keeper Chelsea Hubner slipped on the playing surface and defender Alex O'Brien made a diving save and cleared a ball that was headed for the back of the net.

Shepherd ramped up their attack during the final eight minutes of the game, pulling LaBella to midfield, but they were never able to get the game-tying goal.

Wesleyan outshot Shepherd by a 16-5 margin and owned a 6-3 margin in shots-on-goal.

Wesleyan keeper Ashlee Schumacher played the first half and turned away one shot.

Hubner played the second half and earned the win turning away one shot as well.

Wesleyan held a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.

The Lady Bobcats were guilty of 14 fouls while Shepherd was called for eight.

Shepherd closed out their season with a 5-7-7 mark.

Wesleyan will go into the MEC title game with a 16-2-1 record.

Notre Dame will enter with a 13-3-2 record.
