Ziegle Announces Volleyball Recruiting Class for 2016

BUCKHANNON – West Virginia Wesleyan head volleyball coach Ashley Ziegle has announced her recruiting class for this fall.

Ziegle will welcome 13 new players to the Lady Bobcat program.

Wesleyan will get their 2016 season underway Friday, Sept. 2 when they play Philadelphia University at West Chester University.

SHELBY AKOS -- 6'4" Middle Hitter

ELIZABETH FAFIADE -- 6'0" Middle Hitter

Awards/Accomplishments: Warrior award-2012-13. All-league honorable mention-2013-14, 2nd team -2014-15, 1st team- 2015-16, , Team MVP 2015-16, Led the team in blocking for four straight years, Led the teams in kills for 3 straight years, Broke the school blocking record, four-year varsity letter in Volleyball, Team Captain senior year, three-year varsity letter in basketball.


DEONNA HICKMAN -- 6'0" Middle Hitter

High School: Stafford Senior High School

Hometown: Fredericksburg, Va.

Awards/Accomplishments: Two Varsity Letter Awards (Volleyball & Basketball), two Coaches award for volleyball, Academic Letter Award with a 3.8 GPA or better, Omega Psi Phi Scholastic Achievement Award.


SAVANNAH HOFFMAN -- 5'9" Outside Hitter

MORGAN JOHNSON -- 5'9" Middle Hitter

Hometown: Manchester, Ohio

Awards/Accomplishments: Four-year varsity starter, three-year captain, three- year All-league SHAC, All District HM (soph. year), All District second Team (junior year), All District 1st team and All Ohio (Senior year), Team MVP- Junior and Senior years. Senior year- 415 Kills (1046 total career kills- Manchester High School all-time leader). Led the SHAC- 6th in the Division 4 state, .446 – Hitting percentage- Led the SHAC- 12th in the Division 4 state, 76 Aces- Second in the SHAC- 4th in the Division 4 state, 83 blocks- Second in the SHAC ,437 Digs- Led the SHAC-12th in the Division 4 state.  First Sectional title in 15 years for Manchester (19-5 2015 record). HANNAH JONES -- 5'4" Setter

Awards/Accomplishment- 2015-Team captain, AAA First team All-State (WV), First team All-Conference, Max Preps 3rd team All-American, Prepvolleyball.com High Honorable Mention All-American, two-time Max Preps/AVCA Player of the Week for West Virginia, AARP/WV Metro News Scholar Athlete of the Week for West Virginia, 58WCHS Scholar Athlete of the Week, Max Preps George Washington Volleyball Player of the Year.  Three-year letterman. Second in the Nation according to Max Preps in total assists with 1571, School record in total assists for a season with 1571.  West Virginia AAA State Champs with a 65-1-1 record. 65 wins is a State record.  Mountain State Athletic Conference Champs, Regional and Sectional Champs.  2014- Third place West Virginia AAA State Tournament, Regional and Sectional Champs, 570 assists.

Other: Member of the Beta Club (Honorary Academic Society), two-year letterman in basketball.


ASHTON KING -- 5'9" Outside Hitter

Awards/Accomplishments: Two-time 2015 WV MaxPreps Player of the Week, 2014-15 1st Team All-State, 2013 & 2015 AA All-Tournament Team, 1st All-Cardinal Conference & All-Academic Cardinal Conference: 4yrs., 2013 2nd Team All-State, 2012 Special Honorable Mention.  As a senior- broke five school volleyball records: single season kills (702), single season digs (601), career kills (1,444), career digs (1,209), and career service aces (419). 


KIRSTY LAWRENCE -- 5'5" Defensive Specialist

High School: Roane County High School

Awards/Accomplishments: High School: Named first team all-state her senior year, four-year varsity starter, participated in the north/south all-star game, first team LKC junior and senior year, all state honorable mention junior year. Played for Charleston Volleyball Club three years.


ALEXIS McCOLLUM -- 5'3" Defensive Specialist

KAELYN NASH -- 6'0" Outside Hitter

ARIEL WALKER -- 5'7" Setter

High School: Bayside High School

Hometown: Virginia Beach, Va.

Club: Volleyball 4 Youth


Awards/Accomplishments: Ariel Walker started her volleyball career at eight years old winning her first event in Siesta Keys, Florida, going undefeated in a 12's division beach event, solidifying her undeniable passion for the sport. Within her ten years of playing volleyball, Ariel has won awards for Most Valuable Player, Top Server, and All Tournament Team. Also a competitor in sand volleyball, Ariel has placed 3rd and 5th in the AAU Junior Olympic Games, 5th in the International Festival of Beach Volleyball in Puerto Rico, and received the Team of the Year Award at the North Carolina Championships in 2012. After starting as a varsity setter for her high school team, Ariel decided to pursue sand, along with club, year-round. From 2012-2015 Ariel was ranked in the top ten in the USAV Old Dominion Region and is currently ranked in the top 25% nationally.

Off the court, she can be found at Bayside High School and Health Sciences Academy where she is an active member of the Student Cooperative Association (SCA), National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and the Gifted Advisory Board.


MADELYN WHEELER -- 5'4" Defensive Specialist

Hometown: Chesapeake Virginia

Award/Accomplishment: Played volleyball for Grassfield High School, coached youth rec volleyball, assistant coach Hugo Owens Middle School volleyball, Honor roll. Team Captain.
