BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team looked to be on the verge on a big upset in their Mountain East Conference opener with Fairmont State tonight at Rockefeller Center.
The Lady Bobcats outlasted Fairmont State to take the first set by a 26-24 score, but was never able to sustain that early momentum as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Lady Falcons.
Wesleyan dropped the next three sets – 25-10, 25-14 and 25-9.
Following a service error by Fairmont State, Wesleyan took a 12-5 lead in the first set.
Fairmont State rallied to take a 20-19 lead but the Lady Bobcats refused to the lose the opening set.
A Fairmont State attack error made it 20-20, a kill by Wesleyan's Ashton King gave the Lady Bobcats a 21-20 lead, and another attack error put Wesleyan up by two as the Lady Falcons took a time out.
The Lady Bobcats though were never able to get back on track after that first set win.
Baumann led the Lady Bobcats with 14 kills, Nottingham has 21 assists and Lexi Walsh had 13 digs.
Fairmont State improved to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the MEC.
The loss dropped Wesleyan to 3-10 overall and 0-1 in the MEC.
The Lady Bobcats will return to action Tuesday when they visit West Virginia State for a league outing at 7 p.m.
