Concord's Brian Kennedy rushed for 303 yards on 35 carries with one touchdown to lead Concord to the 2011 WVIAC Championship with a 48-40 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
Adam Neugebauer capped his illustrious career with a personal-best 446 yards on 36-of-54 passing with four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Jon Meadows pulled in 10 passes for 114 yards with one touchdown and T.J. Benners finished with five catches for 86 yards. John Maddox led the way defensively with 11 tackles.
CU's Zach Grossi was 16-of-30 for 142 with five touchdowns. Chris Stewart pulled in six passes for 62 yards and scored three times. Jake Lilly and Joe Greenway each recorded nine tackles.
Concord opened the scoring with Grossi connecting with tight end Rahid Baker from three yards out to give CU a 7-0 lead. Neugebauer answered hooking up with Brandon Hoffman form 20 yards out, but the extra point was blocked leaving CU with a 7-6 lead. Grossi found Stewart from 21 yards out to make it 14-6. Neugebauer plunged in from three yards out to make it 14-13 after one quarter.
The Bobcats got the lead early in the second when Neugebauer found Aaron Lewis from 10 yards out to get the score to 20-14. Grossi snuck in from a yard away to put the Mountain Lions ahead 21-20, Neugebauer threw a 43-yard touchdown strike to Corey Williams to put the Bobcats ahead 27-21 at the half.
Keith Dickens strolled in from two yards out early in the third quarter to extend the Wesleyan lead to 34-21. Grossi again connected with Stewart to get the Mountain Lions within six at 34-28. CU went back in front when Grossi found Gary Roach from six yards out to make the score 35-34. After a Greenway interception, Grossi found Stewart from 11 yards away to extend the CU advantage to 42-34 after three quarters.
Kennedy plunged in from a yard out late in the fourth but the extra point was no good so the score was 48-34. Neugebauer led the Bobcats with a quick scoring drive culminating with a Meadows touchdown catch from 10 yards out on fourth down. The Bobcats onside attempt was kicked out of bounds but the defense stopped Concord on fourth down with 40 seconds left. Neugebauer was sacked on the first play from scrimmage and after a hook and lateral play Neugebauer's final pass was incomplete and the clock read zero, but CU was flagged for sideline infraction giving the Bobcats one final chance, Zane Zebrasky dropped back to pass but was intercepted sealing the Concord victory.
The Bobcats finish the 2011 campaign 9-2 and 6-2 in conference play.
