Men's Soccer Downs Gannon, 2-1

The men's soccer team was in action this afternoon on their home field against Gannon University. After fighting through the high temperatures for 90 minutes the Bobcats managed to come out on top and defeated the Golden Knights 2-1.

Wesleyan controlled the ball the first half, out shooting Gannon, 7-2.

The first goal of the game came with 26:17 minutes on the clock when the Bobcats managed to tie the ball up in front of Gannon's net. After a few shot attempts, freshman, Paul Riesthuis, finally found the opening in the goal, putting Wesleyan on the board. Riesthuis' goal was assisted by junior, Daniel Smee (pictured).

In the second half the Golden Knights grabbed the first goal just 12 minutes in when Evan Tolic headed a well placed corner kick into the net, tying the game 1-1.

With nearly four minutes left in play Smee took a free kick to the left of the goal. Smee hammered the ball right through the defenders and straight over the hands of the goalie, allowing Wesleyan to regain the lead of the game.

The Bobcats managed to hold the Golden Knights for the rest of the game and ended the game with a final score of 2-1.

Winning the game in the goalie for Wesleyan was senior, Ryan McDougal. McDougal had a total of six saves while in goal.

The Bobcats are now 2-0 in the start of their 2011 season and are next in action this coming Wednesday, September 7th, as they travel to Erie, PA, to take on the Mercyhurst Lakers. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
