Men's Soccer Falls to #16 Mercyhurst

West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer dropped their first game of their 2011 season on the road this afternoon to Mercyhurst College. The Bobcats went into today's match up ranked 6th in the nation, while, the Lakers were ranked 15th.

Mercyhurst controlled the game the majority of the first half, out shooting the Bobcats, 7-3. With the control of the ball, the Lakers capitalized by getting on the board first, with two goals before half time.

The first goal came with just over 25 minutes on the clock, when the Laker, Eric Steinmetz, rebounded a teammates shot into an empty net. Merely ten minutes later, Mercyhurst got their second goal when Austin Solomon sent the ball flying past Wesleyan's goalie, Ryan McDougal, after he dove for the save attempt.

The second half the Bobcats fought back, getting their first goal of the game with less than twelve minutes to go in regular time when junior, Jacob Maitland (pictured), took a shot on goal and the Laker goalie lost control of the save.

Despite attempts, Wesleyan couldn't grab another goal and the Bobcats lost to the Lakers with a final score of 1-2.

Wesleyan now moves to a record of 2-1 for the season and are next in action this Saturday, September 10th, against Bloomsburg University. The game is at Bloomsburg and is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
