Concord Slips Past Wesleyan, 64-59

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Concord used a 6-0 blitz over the final two minutes of the game to come away with a 64-59 win over Wesleyan on Saturday.

Atavia Blake led the Lady Bobcats in scoring with 14 points. Danesha Richardson added a double-double with 12 points and game-high 13 rebounds. Kacey Johnson scored 11 points off the bench for Wesleyan.

Amanda Smith (15), Katy Somerville (14) and Sammi Webster (11) all finished in double figures for Concord.

Wesleyan made only 14-of-27 attempts at the charity stripe for the game, while the Mountain Lions made 11-of-15 attempts. WVWC held a 52-43 advantage on the glass, but lost the turnover battle 20 to 14.

 The Mountain Lions broke an 8-8 tie with a 15-5 surge to go in front 23-13 in the first half. Somerville and Smith combined for all 15 points. CU would go to the locker room holding a 36-30 advantage.

Wesleyan opened the second half with an 8-0 jolt to snatch a 38-36 lead. Neither team led by more than a basket from there until the Mountain Lions took a 58-53 lead with just over four minutes to play. WVWC  answered with a 6-0 run to take a brief 59-58 lead. Webster put Concord ahead for good with a lay-up, making the score 60-59; the Mountain Lions closed the game by hitting 4-of-4 attempts at the free throw line.  

Wesleyan returns to action next Saturday as they welcome Seton Hill at 2 p.m.
