Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The Lady Bobcats will be participating in the Play 4Kay initiative on Saturday as Shepherd enters the Rockefeller Center.
The Play 4Kay initiative seeks to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research in memory of the late Kay Yow, former women's basketball coach at North Carolina State. Yow passed in 2006 after her third battle with breast cancer. Over 4.5 million dollars has been raised through this initiative.
The Lady Bobcats look to get back on track after Glenville State snapped the WVWC five game win streak with an 88-80 win. Wesleyan enters Saturday's meeting with the Rams at 14-6 overall and 11-4 in WVIAC play. Lydia Bridenbaugh paces the Bobcats with 22 points per contest. Jamie Kaufman adds 19.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest.
Shepherd has reeled off six straight victories, including winning eight of its last nine contests. The Lady Rams have struggled away from home though, with a record of just 3-8. Only one of SU's six wins have come away from Shepherdstown. The Lady Rams are 15-9 on the year and sitting fourth in the conference; they currently hold a record of 12-6 in league play. SU is coming off a 60-53 victory over Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday. Shepherd leads the league in field goal percentage defense (37 percent) and rebounding margin. (+7.6) Emily Daniel (12.8 ppg) and Katie Biggs (12.0 ppg) lead the Lady Rams offensive attack.
West Virginia Wesleyan handed Shepherd its only home loss (12-1) for the year on January 9, the Lady Bobcats rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to claim a 90-82 win. Kaufman (28) and Bridenbaugh (27) combined for 55 points in the win. Shepherd has won eight of nine since that loss.
The Wesleyan men have been victorious in six straight contests, including eight of their last nine. The Bobcats are 14-6 overall and currently stand fifth in the conference at 10-6. WVWC has not lost at home since December 11 (7-0). Wesleyan is led by Kelsey Williams' 18.9 points and 10 rebounds per game. Raymont McElroy averages 18.9 points and Reggie Chambers adds 12.8 points to the Bobcats offensive prowess.
The Rams have won four of five, including three in a row to get to 12-10 on the year and are currently sixth in the conference standings at 10-8. The Shepherd men have had trouble on the road this season, going just 3-7. The Rams knocked off Wheeling Jesuit Thursday by a score of 97-88. Chad Moore leads the Shepherd attack with 19.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Brantley Osborne (15.0) and Sidney McCray (13.9) also score in double figures for the Rams. Osborne and McCray each shoot better than 40 percent from beyond the arc.
Shepherd topped Wesleyan on January 9 in Shepherdstown by a score of 70-65. McCray hit 8-of-11 threes in the game to propel the Rams to the victory. Wesleyan has won eight of nine since that meeting, while SU has gone just 4-5.
Admission to Saturday's contest is $5 for adults, $3 for children 6-12, and children under six are free. Tip-off for the women's game is set for 2 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 4. Fans are reminded to wear pink. The athletic department will donate half of the gate proceeds to the Play 4Kay initiative.
