Box Score ELKINS, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of turnovers and second chance opportunities to hold off upset-minded Davis & Elkins, 73-66 on Saturday afternoon.
Lydia Bridenbaugh netted a game-high 28 points. Jamie Kaufman recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Davis & Elkins was led by Jordan Lykes double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds). Page Turner added 19 points and eight assists. Rachel Gostomski finished with 12 points for D&E.
The Lady Bobcats converted 19 Senator turnovers into 20 points. Wesleyan held a 33-26 advantage on the glass, including 13 offensive rebounds which led to 13 second chance points in the contest. WVWC hit on 23-of-27 attempts at the free throw line for the game, including 18-of-19 in the second half. Bridenbaugh and Kaufman combined to go 21-of-22 at the charity stripe.
Davis & Elkins got off to a fast start, grabbing an early 9-4 lead. Wesleyan answered with a 14-2 jolt to go in front 18-11, Bridenbaugh buried a pair of threes to spark the run. The Lady Senators were able to knot the game at 18-18, only to see WVWC go on a 9-2 sprint to retake the lead at 27-20. Wesleyan went to the break holding a 34-28 advantage.
Wesleyan used a 17-3 spurt in the second half to take its largest lead of the game at 59-38, Bridenbaugh and Kaufman scored 13 of the 17 points during the run. Davis & Elkins wouldn't quit, going on a 23-8 run to close the gap to 67-61 with one minute to play; Turner contributed 12 of the 23 points. Bridenbaugh would seal the victory going 6-of-6 at the free throw line in the final minute to give the Lady Bobcats the 73-66 win.
Wesleyan moves to 18-6 overall and 15-4 in league play. The Lady Bobcats host West Liberty on Monday night at 5:30 p.m. Monday is a women's game only.
