BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan and Alderson-Broaddus split a pair of highly competitive contests on Wednesday afternoon. The Battlers took game one 3-1, while Wesleyan picked up a walk-off 6-5 win in game two.
In game one, A-B used a wild pitch and an RBI single to grab a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Battlers scored a run on an error in the fourth to make the score 3-0. Gene Franks got the Bobcats on the board with an RBI single in the fifth to trim the deficit to 3-1, but it wasn't enough as A-B came away with the3-1 win.
Aaron Adams (3-2) worked the complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out four and walking two.
In game two, the Battlers manufactured a run in the first on an RBI groundout. The Bobcats answered with an RBI single by Mark Darlington to tie the game at 1-1 after one. A-B scratched across one run in both the fourth and fifth to take a 3-1 lead. WVWC scored one in the sixth on an RBI single by Shane Valentine. The Battlers plated a pair in the seventh to push the advantage to 5-2.
Ryan Lewicki got the Bobcats' rally started with an RBI single. Franks followed with a two-RBI single of his own, and after a pitching change, Mark Darlington drove in Lewicki with a single to send Wesleyan home with the 6-5 win.
Warren Hammel (4-0) went the distance for the Bobcats, giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts.
The Bobcats are now 9-12 overall and 4-4 in WVIAC play. Wesleyan welcomes Charleston to Hank Ellis Field on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
