BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan earned a doubleheader sweep against Charleston on Sunday evening. The Bobcats took game one, 5-4 and won the nightcap 6-4.
In game one, Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the first with an RBI groundout by Gene Franks. Mark Darlington followed with an RBI single to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead after one. UC knotted the game at 2-2 with a pair of RBI groundouts in the second. Corey Flickinger put Wesleyan back in front with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Lewicki added an RBI groundout, while Franks picked up an RBI single to push the advantage to 5-2 after two. The Golden Eagles plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the third to trim the deficit to 5-3. UC added a run in the sixth on an RBI single to close the gap to 5-4.
Aaron Adams (4-2) went the distance to pick up the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, J.R. Tenney drove in the game's first run with a single in the second. Tom Brunswick added an RBI in the inning with a perfectly executed squeeze play and Franks earned three RBI with a bases clearing double to make the score 5-0 after two innings. UC cut the lead to 5-3 with a solo homer in the third and two-RBI double in the fourth. Flickinger pushed the advantage to 6-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Charleston scored one in the seventh, but Chris Stein was able to shut the door.
Warren Hammel (5-0) earned the victory, working 6.1 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out one. Stein tossed the final two-thirds of an inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.
