WASHINGTON, Pa. – West Virginia Wesleyan won both ends of a doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday afternoon. The Bobcats took game one 4-3, and rolled to an 18-4 victory in game two.
In game one, Ryan Lewicki gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the third inning. Wesleyan pushed the lead to 3-0 on a balk in the fourth. Corey Flickinger drove home a run with a single in the sixth to make the score 4-0. The Cardinals attempted to rally in the seventh with a run on a groundout and a two-RBI single, before a groundout sent the Bobcats away with the 4-3 win.
Aaron Adams (5-2) went the distance for the Bobcats, giving up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, Wesleyan wasted little time as Mark Darlington's two-RBI single in the first put the Bobcats ahead, 2-0. WVWC would add a run on a wild pitch and Matt Edwards pushed the lead to 4-0 in the first with an RBI single. Spencer Webley kept the Bobcats rolling with a two-run big fly in the third. Tom Brunswick and Flickinger each tacked on RBI singles in the inning, while Gene Franks added a two-RBI single. Darlington capped the huge inning with a two-run triple to push the score to 12-0 after three. The Cardinals plated a run in both the third and fifth to trim the deficit to 12-2. Edwards' second RBI single of the game made the score 13-2 after six innings. Webley and Edwards tallied RBI singles in the seventh, before WVWC scored on a WJU error. Flickinger notched Wesleyan's final run with an RBI double. Jesuit scored two runs in the bottom half, but Wesleyan cruised to the 18-4 win.
Warren Hammel (6-0) worked five innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out one and walking three. Nick Benges tossed one inning, surrendering two runs on three hits with one strikeout. Cassey Defibaugh pitched one perfect inning, striking out two.
The Bobcats improve to 14-12 overall and 9-4 in league play. Wesleyan puts its' five game win streak on the line at Glenville State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
