BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan picked up a pair of victories over West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took game one, 4-0 and held on for a 9-6 victory in game two.
In game one, Wesleyan manufactured a pair of runs in the third with a sacrifice fly from Ryan Lewicki and an RBI groundout by Gene Franks to grab a 2-0 lead. Mitch Tomlinson added a solo blast to left in the fourth to extend the advantage to 3-0. Matt Edwards drove in the game's final run in the sixth with an RBI single to set the 4-0 margin.
Aaron Adams (8-3) tossed the complete game, surrendering just three hits while striking out a pair and walking three.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets got an RBI single in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Wesleyan answered with back-to-back RBI singles from Aaron Wiegel and Tomlinson to go in front 2-1 after one. Cory Flickinger added to the lead with an RBI double and would later score on an RBI single by Lewicki to extend the lead to 4-1 in the second. Lewicki added to the lead in the fourth with a bases-loaded walk. Franks and Mark Darlington tacked on RBI singles in the inning while Wiegel worked a bases-loaded walk to break the game open at 8-1. Wesleyan would score one more in the inning to lead 9-1 after four innings. WVSU cut into the lead with a two-RBI single in the fifth to make the score 9-3. West Virginia State loaded the bases in the seventh and scored three runs, but Wesleyan was able to hold on for the 6-3 win.
Andrew Ornes (2-3) worked 6.1 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Cassey Defibaugh worked the final two-thirds of an inning giving up one hit.
WVWC improves to 22-13 overall and 17-5 in league play. The Bobcats and Yellow Jackets wrap up their weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Wesleyan's four baseball seniors will be recognized prior to the game.
