BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan scored nine runs in the first inning to send its seniors out with a 14-2 victory over West Virginia State on Sunday afternoon.
Aaron Wiegel got the first inning started with an RBI single. Matt Edwards drove in a run with a RBI single later in the inning, followed by back-to-back two-RBI doubles from J.R. Tenney and Tom Brunswick. Cory Flickinger and Wiegel drove in the final two tallies in the inning to set the score at 9-0 after one inning.
Wesleyan added to its lead in the third with an RBI double by Mark Darlington. Ryan Lewicki notched a sacrifice fly in the fourth to push the advantage to 11-0. A balk and an Edwards' sacrifice fly made the score 13-0 after five innings. The Yellow Jackets got a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 13-2. The Bobcats plated a run in the bottom of the inning on a groundout to make the score 14-2. WVSU scored on in the ninth on an RBI single to set the final margin at 14-3
Warren Hammel (8-0) tossed eight innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Shaun McCoy worked the final inning, surrendering one run on two hits while striking out two.
The Bobcats are now 23-13 overall and 18-5 in WVIAC play. Wesleyan battles Fairmont State on Wednesday in its final home game of the year. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
