VIENNA, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan earned a pair of victories over Ohio Valley on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats came away with a 5-1 win in eight innings in game one, and held on for a 5-3 victory in game two.
In game one, Matt Edwards put Wesleyan in front 1-0 with an RBI double in the second. The Fighting Scots turned a seventh inning error into a run, sending the game to extra frames tied at 1-1. Gene Franks and Aaron Wiegel each recorded an RBI single in the eighth, putting Wesleyan back in front 3-1. An OVU error led to two more runs in the inning, making the score 5-1. The Fighting Scots loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Nick Benges was able to end the game with a strikeout to seal the 5-1 win.
Aaron Adams (9-3) worked 7.2 innings to pick up the win, allowing one unearned run on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. Benges recorded the game's final out to earn his first save of the season.
In game two, Spencer Webley got Wesleyan on the scoreboard in the fourth with an RBI single, Matt Edwards followed with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0. An OVU error plated another run, and Cory Flickinger scored one with an RBI single giving Wesleyan a 4-0 advantage. OVU strung together five hits in the bottom of the inning to plate three runs and cut the lead to 4-3 after four innings. An OVU error led to an insurance run for the Bobcats as they came away with the 5-3 victory.
Warren Hammel (9-0) only went four innings, but earned the win yielding three runs on seven hits with a strikeout. Benges worked three innings, giving up just one hit while striking out five and walking one to earn his second save of the day.
The Bobcats have now won 16 of their last 17 to improve to 25-13 overall and 20-5 in WVIAC play. Wesleyan and Ohio Valley wrap-up their three-game set on Saturday at 1 p.m.
