Box Score 2 VIENNA, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan was able to overcome a 90-minute rain delay to push past West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon to claim the 2012 WVIAC Tournament crown.
The Yellow Jackets were able to make things interesting though, claiming a 4-1 win over the Bobcats forcing the winner take all second game.
In game one, Brittany Hyatt put the Jackets in front with a single in the first, and would later score on a double to take a 2-0 lead. Hyatt pushed the WVSU lead to 3-0 with another RBI single in the third and would score again to make the score 4-0. Wesleyan's lone run came in the fifth on an RBI single by Kelli McCullough. WVSU would go on to claim the 4-1 win.
Jacqui Omichinski (14-5) worked just two innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits. Kaitlyn Carey tossed the final five innings, scattering seven hits with three strikeouts.
In game two, Carey blasted a three-run homer in the fourth to give Wesleyan a 3-0 lead. Hyatt cut the lead to one at 3-2 in the sixth with a two-run homer. The rain came down at the conclusion of the sixth, and the grounds crew was called in to cover the field, sending the game into a rain delay. After the delay, the Jackets were able to get a runner to third, but Wesleyan hung on for the 3-2 win.
Hillary Perez-Ashley (17-3) tossed the complete game, yielding two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Omichinski was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Carey and Perez-Ashley were also named to the all-tournament team.
