BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The No. 4 seed West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team erased a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to secure a come-from-behind 5-2 win over No. 5 seed University of Charleston in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region #1 Semifinals Sunday afternoon at Bluefield City Courts.
The Golden Eagles (13-10) were first to claim a point, UC's no. 1 doubles team of Sam Humphrey and Dennis Okoth defeated West Va. Wesleyan's no. 1 team Aitor Reperaz and Joel Izquierdo 8-4.
The Bobcats (12-5) tied the match with a win in the No. 3 doubles flight as Douglas Oliveira and Nathan Savill took the match 8-5 over Kyle Barrett and Gabe Seymour. The Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead after Matt Sherba teamed with Rico Williams to down Javier Yim Kim and Eduard Gusevs 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Bobcats quickly knotted the match 2-2 with a win in the No. 4 singles flight as Oliveira cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Barrett. Gusevs won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 over Humphrey in the No. 2 singles match to put the Bobcats ahead 3-2. They took a 4-2 lead after Yim Kim won a 6-1, 7-5 battle over Sherba in the No. 1 singles flight before WVWC closed out the match with Savill's victory at the No. 6 singles 6-4, 7-5 over Seymour.
The Bobcats will take on the No. 1 seed Bluefield State Big Blues in the Regional Final Monday morning at 10 a.m. at the Bluefield City Courts.
