Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan earned a pair of wins over Charleston on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats to game one, 18-2 on the strength of a 13-run second inning, and held on for a 4-3 victory in game two.
In game one, Charleston took a brief 1-0 lead in the second with a solo home run. Kelli McCullough tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Amanda Davis picked up an RBI with a single, while Tyler Welch drove in two with a single of her own. Brittanie Gloyd drove in a run on an error and Paige Cummings executed a squeeze play to pick up an RBI. Kaitlyn Carey delivered the big hit in the inning a three-run bomb down the left field line to make the score 9-1. Davis' second RBI of the inning made it 10-1 and Welch's second two-RBI single pushed the lead to 12-1. Alex Furr drove in a run with a single to make the score 13-1 after two innings.
The Wesleyan offense would continue to roll in the third with a sacrifice fly from Jacqui Omichinski. McCullough added an RBI single and Chelsea Sommer launched a bases-clearing double to center to make the score 18-1. Charleston got a solo homer in the fifth, but that would be all as Wesleyan took the 18-2 win.
Hillary Perez-Ashley (9-3) worked the full five innings, giving up two runs on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, Cummings put Wesleyan in front 1-0 in the first with an RBI double down the left field line. Furr and Cummings each picked up an RBI single in the second to push the lead to 3-0. UC trimmed the lead to 3-2 with a pair of solo home runs in the fifth. Davis gave the Bobcats some insurance in the bottom of the inning with an RBI on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. The Golden Eagles got an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 4-3, but were unable to capitalize with runners on first and second as Wesleyan came away with a 4-3 victory.
Omichinski (11-4) got the call in game two, working 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Carey tossed 2.1 innings, surrendering one unearned run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts to pick up her second save of the year.
Wesleyan improves 26-10 overall and 11-3 in league play. The Bobcats host Davis & Elkins on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
