BUCKHANNON, W.Va.—The Bobcats' baseball team ran its win streak to 10 games with a sweep of Bluefield State on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took game one, 9-4 and rallied from a two-run deficit in the seventh to claim a 7-6 victory in game two.
In game one, Bluefield State took advantage of a Wesleyan error to plate three runs in the first inning to lead 3-0. Gene Franks knotted the game at 3-3 with a three-run blast in the bottom of the inning. Matt Edwards, J.R. Tenney and Tom Brunswick all tacked on RBI in the inning, putting Wesleyan in front 6-3. The Blues trimmed the deficit to 6-4 with a sacrifice fly in the third. The Bobcats pushed their advantage to 8-4 with runs coming on an error and a balk in the bottom of the inning. Edwards would drive home the game's final tally in the sixth as Wesleyan took the 9-4 victory.
Warren Hammel (7-0) hurled six innings, allowing four runs (one earned) with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Nick Benges tossed one inning, striking out three and walking one.
In game two, the Bobcats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Mark Darlington. Wesleyan extended its lead in the third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Aaron Wiegel to push the advantage to 3-0. Lewicki's sacrifice fly in the fourth made the score 4-0. Bluefield State scored a pair of runs in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and RBI single to trim the lead to 4-2. Bluefield State pushed across four runs in the seventh, compliments of two Wesleyan errors, to take a 6-4 lead.
Franks and Darlington singled to open the bottom of the seventh, and with two outs and facing a two strike count, Edwards notched an RBI double to knot the game at 6-6. After Tenney was given an intentional pass, Brunswick stepped in and hit a line drive over the shortstop to score Edwards and give Wesleyan a 7-6 win.
Andrew Ornes got the call in game two, working 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Benges hurled two innings, yielding three runs (one earned) while striking out one. Chris Stein tossed one-third of an inning, surrendering one unearned run on one hit. Cassey Defibaugh (1-0) picked up the win, pitching one-third of an inning, striking out one and walking one.
The Bobcats are now 19-12 overall and 14-4 in WVIAC play. Wesleyan puts its 10 game win streak on the line at West Liberty on Tuesday.
