JOHNSTOWN, W.Va. – Concord pounded out 16 hits en route to a 12-8 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on day two of the WVIAC tournament.
Wesleyan jumped ahead 1-0 on an RBI single by Mark Darlington in the first inning. Tom Brunswick extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer – his first of the season – in the second inning. Concord got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs on four hits to trim the lead to 3-2. Concord grabbed a 5-3 lead in the third with back-to-back RBI triples. Brunswick cut the deficit to 5-4 with an RBI triple in the fourth. CU tacked on three runs in the fourth to push their advantage to 8-4. Gene Franks belted a solo shot in the fifth and Cory Flickinger added a two-run blast to pull WVWC within one at 8-7. The Mountain Lions notched two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to build a 12-7 lead. Flickinger drove in Wesleyan's final run with a groundout in the ninth, but Concord held on for the 12-8 win.
Warren Hammel (9-2) lasted just two innings, surrendering five runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Chris Stein worked two innings, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out one and walking one. Cassey Defibaugh tossed two innings, yielding four runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk. Dan Marcine hurled two perfect innings with one strikeout.
The Bobcats will need to defeat Alderson-Broaddus in tomorrow's 4:30 p.m. matchup in order to earn a spot in the Championship Game.
