BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan and Fairmont State split a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons took game one, 5-3 while Wesleyan bounced back for a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
In game one, Gene Franks blasted a home run that hit the foul pole down the right field line to put Wesleyan in front 1-0. The Falcons tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the second. Tyler Brunswick broke the tie in the bottom of the inning with a single to put Wesleyan back on top 2-1. The Falcons tied the game at one with an RBI single. Aaron Wiegel drove in a run in the third to once again take a one-run lead at 3-2 after three innings. FSU knotted the game at 3-3 on a solo home run, and would take a 4-3 lead with an RBI double in the sixth. Fairmont State would add an insurance run in the seventh to claim the 5-3 victory.
Aaron Adams (10-4) worked 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, FSU got an RBI double followed by an RBI single to grab a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Falcons would push their lead to 3-0 after an RBI single in the second. Spencer Webley cut the deficit to one with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Fairmont State got another RBI single in the third to take a 4-2 lead. J.R. Tenney knotted the game at 4-4 with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Tom Brunswick tacked on a run with an RBI triple in the sixth and would score on a squeeze play by Kirby Patterson to give Wesleyan a 7-4 lead in the fifth.
Warren Hammel got the start, lasting two innings, surrendering four runs on six hits. Andrew Ornes (3-4) worked 3.2 innings to get the win, scattering three hits while striking out six and walking a pair. Chris Stein picked up his seventh save of the season, working 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Wesleyan is now 27-17 overall and 22-9 in WVIAC play. The Bobcats head to Johnstown, Pa. for the WVIAC Tournament beginning May 10.
