BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Wheeling Jesuit scorched the nets, shooting 60 percent (28-of-47) en route to a 77-74 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
Noah Cottrill registered his first career double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Cottrill hit seven of the Bobcats' season-high 17 threes. Soren Dossing added 19 points and T.J. Thompson finished with 14 points.
Ben Siefert led the Cardinals with 23 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the field, while handing out a game-best seven assists. Joe Prati (13), Andre Harris (12) and Justin Fritts (12) also finished in double figures for WJU.
Wheeling Jesuit raced to a 19-8 lead behind a quartet of threes. Wesleyan jumped back into the game with a 10-3 sprint to get within six at 32-26. The Cardinals went to the break holding a 43-39 lead.
The Bobcats held a slight 16-13 advantage on the glass in the first 20 minutes. WJU shot 56 percent (15-of-27), including burying 8-of-16 threes.
Wesleyan opened the second half with a 20-6 blitz that included six threes to go in front, 59-49. The Cardinals responded with an 11-2 jolt to trim the lead to 62-60. The run was aided by four Wesleyan turnovers.
With the game tied at 69-69, Siefert drove to the rim to put WJU on top 71-69 with just under two minutes to play. Wesleyan missed a layup and three on their next two possessions, while the Cardinals made 2-of-4 at the free throw line to extend the lead to 73-69. Cottrill hit a pair of free throws to get the deficit down to 73-71, but Prati and Harris each made a pair of free throws to seal the 77-74 victory.
Wesleyan will look to get back on track Thursday night as they travel to Davis & Elkins at 7:30 p.m.
