Buckhannon, WV--West Virginia Wesleyan won four of the six singles matches to claim a 5-4 win over UVA-Wise here Sunday afternoon, securing a 4th place finish in their first season of the new Mountain East Conference.
Allene Connor's 6-3 7-5 marathon win over Rose Bennett at #5 singles sealed the win for the Bobcats, who finish MEC play with a record of 4-3, while the Cavaliers slip to 3-4. Wesleyan now stands at 6-3 overall, besting their win total from a year ago when they finished 5-12 and in 9th place in the former WVIAC.
Paula Pimenta, Julia Uchoa, and Sarah Cameron also turned in singles wins for the 'Cats, Pimenta and Uchoa also paired up to earn the the team's first point, taking a win at #1 doubles. Pimenta finishes her inaugural MEC regular season undefeated at #1 singles with a 7-0 record, and she now stands at 11-1 in all singles matches.
The Bobcats return to action against this same UVA-Wise squad in Charleston this coming Friday as the teams will square off in the first round of the MEC Championships. Match time is set for 11am, with the winner moving on to the semifinals Saturday at 9am.
