Buckhannon, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston rode a doubles sweep to anchor a comfortable 7-2 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in MEC women's tennis action Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles pulled out close wins at #1 and #2 doubles and carried that momentum into singles, where they won the bottom 4 singles positions in straight sets.
The Lady Bobcats once again were led by their top player Paula Pimenta, who completed an undefeated week in singles against the top 3 teams in the MEC with a workman-like 6-4 6-4 win over UC's Ana Pina. The Bobcat freshman is now 9-1 overall in singles and 7-0 against conference competition.
Wesleyan got their other point from freshman Julia Uchoa, who pulled out a 7-5 6-3 victory over Kelsey Hensley at #2 singles. Uchoa and Pimenta lost a narrow 9-7 decision at #1 doubles to Pina and Hensley.
"We had a tough week considering the results, but we showed improvements in our approach and level of play against the best teams in the conference", said coach Marc Walters, who saw his team drop to 4-3 overall, and 2-3 in the MEC.
"We will learn to take advantage of opportunities in doubles as we get some more experience, and we definitely need to eliminate unforced errors on our serves and in the return game. It'll come as long as we stick to the game plan."
Wesleyan returns to the court for a couple home matches this week to close out conference play. Concord comes to Buckhannon for a 3pm start on Thursday, while UVA-Wise visits on Sunday for an 11am match.
