Buckhannon, W.Va. -- The Wesleyan Women's Basketball team overcame a 12 point first half deficit to earn a hard fought victory verse the Lady Battlers of AB Tuesday evening in a non-conference tilt held at John D. Rockefeller Center. The Bobcats used a 50 point 2nd half outburst to convincingly beat Alderson-Broaddus 86-73.
It was truly a tale of two completely different halves Tuesday evening. Wesleyan, (1-1, 0-0) who was equally as bad on defense in the first half as they were good in the second, gave up an astounding 48 points to the Battlers. Alderson-Broaddus was able to shoot a crippling 8-13 from behind the arc in the first session that allowed the Battlers to push the lead out as far as 18 before the Bobcats could wind up the first half on a little run to close the gap to 12. KiKi DeVane and Brittany Williams, who would foul out in the game, found themselves in early foul trouble plaguing the 'Cats but the momentum gained by the Bobcats would carry over to the second half.
Turnovers were the difference in the second half for the Battlers as they committed an overwhelming 26 for the game compared to Wesleyan's 12. The Bobcats narrowed the gap and would eventually tie the game at 57 a piece on an Allie Brown free throw for the first time since 0-0. Lauren Graham would continue the push as she knocked down one of her two tre's on the evening to give the Bobcats their first lead at 60-57. Wesleyan applied pressure throughtout most of the 2nd half, never allowing the Battlers to slow down and run their offense that opened up so many good looks in the first half. The forced turnovers and easy Bobcat baskets would be too much in the end for the Battlers. Despite poor free throw shooting from the 'Cats (21-41), they would shut the door on the Battlers from the charity stripe in the last two minutes as AB tried to extend the game.
Wesleyan was led by Brittany Williams and her 17 points, despite fouling out. Fourteen of her 17 came in the first half and provided just enough to keep the game at hand. DeVane would follow her first double-double output of the year against Livingstone with another solid 10 point, eight rebound performance. Kacey Johnson would chime in with 14 and Brown would contribute 17 points and tie teammates DeVane, Allyson Freiermuth, Adrian Cunningham, and Courtney Small with three team leading assists.
With the victory the Lady Bobcats move to 1-1 on the year and are off until Saturday when they travel to Fairmont State. Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
