Philippi, W.Va – The Wesleyan Women's Basketball team defeated Alderson-Broaddus in an overtime thriller 74-67 Saturday at Rex Piles Arena. This marks the second come from behind victory over the Battlers this year for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats (2-3, 0-2) marked 30 points in each the first and second halves before outscoring the Battlers 14-7 in overtime to earn the victory. After the first half, Wesleyan found themselves down 34-30, however, held the Battlers to only 24 second half points sending the game to overtime at 60-60. The Bobcats were led by Kacey Johnson and her 42 minutes of action. She compiled 17 points on 5-18 shooting while going 7-9 from the charity stripe. Teammate Brittany Williams added an all-important double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Allyson Freiermuth tallied 16 points of her own.
The Bobcats forced 28 turnovers adding 19 steals, while only coughing it up 15 times themselves. Adrian Cunningham provided to be a spark off the bench going a perfect 4-4 from the field adding eight points in 13 minutes of play, but all five Bobcat starters accumulated over 30 minutes of action against the Battlers.
Wesleyan would hold the lead 60-55 with 3:13 remaining in the second half however the Battlers' Rachel Mills would tie the game with 0:57 left on two free throws and neither team would score again. In the extra period Wesleyan's KiKi DeVane would start off the scoring with a layup then later added an And-1 and converted on her free throw pushing the 'Cats ahead 69-63. Williams would ice the game with some clutch free throws of her own finishing the scoring at 74-67.
The victory sends the Bobcats home where they will wait, along with the Men, until Thursday when the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise come to town. Tip is slated for 5:30pm.
