BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Caleb Ashley established a new career-high with 31 points (25 in the second half) to lead Wesleyan to an 87-73 win over Glenville State on Monday night.
Ashley finished 10-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three and was a perfect 8-of-8 (3-of-3from three)in the second half.
Kelsey Williams posted his 14th double-double of the season (25 points, 17 rebounds). The 17 rebounds marked a new career-best for the senior from Sandusky, Ohio. Chris Dewberry added 10 points and Ray Warren handed out a game-high five assists.
Jamel Morris (25), Kevin Gray (16) and Andy Dollman (11) all finished in double figures for Glenville.
Wesleyan turned 18 GSC turnovers into 23 points, while the Pioneers scored just six points on Wesleyan turnovers. The Bobcats also tallied 10 offensive rebounds, scoring 14 second chance points, while GSC managed just four second chance points.
The game was marred by 52 fouls (32 for GSC, 20 for Wesleyan). WVWC struggled at the free throw line, making just 27-of-46 (59 percent), while the Pioneers made 22-of-26 (85 percent). The Bobcats shot 51 percent (26-of-51) from the field, while limiting the Pioneers to 39 percent (21-of-54).
Glenville State scored the first seven points of the contest, only to see the Bobcats register 24 of the game's next 31 to take a 24-14 lead. Ashley sparked the run with a three from the right corner. The Pioneers pulled back two within six at 26-20, but the Bobcats were able to close out the half with a 10-4 jolt capped by Ashley's second three of the night.
Williams netted 18 points and 11 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Wesleyan held a 20-13 advantage on the glass in the first half, including eight boards on the offensive end which translated into eight second chance points. The Bobcats forced nine GSC turnovers and turned them into nine points.
The Bobcats forged ahead with a 13-6 sprint to take their largest lead of the game at 54-33. Ashley netted eight of the 13 points, including a pair of threes. GSC whittled away at the lead, pulling within 10 at 77-67, but in the end it was too much Ashley as he scored six of the final 10 points for Wesleyan to secure the 87-73 victory.
The Bobcats will look to make it three in a row on Saturday when they head to Seton Hill at 4 p.m.
