Box Score 2 BELMONT, N.C. – Wesleyan picked up a pair of wins over Belmont Abbey on Friday. The Bobcats took game one 4-0, and rallied to claim a 12-7 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Megan Malenstyn put Wesleyan on top 1-0 in the third with an RBI single. Later in the inning Kaitlyn Carey drove a single down the left field line to plate a pair, extending the Bobcats advantage to 3-0 after three innings. Tyler Welch tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single in the fifth to set the 4-0 margin.
Carey (1-0) tossed the complete game, scattering three hits and striking out four, while only walking one.
In game two, the Crusader's first run came on a passed ball in the first inning. Belmont Abbey got a bases-loaded triple to extend the lead to 4-0. The Crusaders added a run in the second on a squeeze play to push the lead to 5-0. Wesleyan got on the board in the third when Ashley Hurrey scored on a wild pitch. Hurrey drove a two-RBI single to right to trim the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth. Alex Furr knotted the game at 5-5 later in the inning with a two-RBI single, and later scored on a Malenstyn single to give WVWC a 6-5 advantage. Carleigh Hall kept the offense going in the fifth with a two-RBI double and scored on a two-RBI single from Paige Cummings, making the score 10-5. The Crusaders cut the deficit to 10-7 with a two-run blast in the bottom of the inning, but Malenstyn and Carey each drove in runs in the seventh to secure the 12-7 win.
Jessica Griffin got the start, but struggled with control, lasting only 1.1 innings surrendering five runs (one earned) on three hits, while walking four and striking out a pair. Kaitlyn Hanna (1-0) earned her first career win tossing 5.2 innings allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Wesleyan will face Catawba on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader with the first pitch at 1 p.m.
