Box Score INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Eleventh-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan advanced to the quarterfinal round of the WVIAC Tournament with a 66-56 victory over sixth-seeded West Virginia State on Monday night.
Brittany Maxey (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Atavia Blake (14 points, 11 rebounds) each posted double-doubles. Kerry Conroy added 14 points for WVWC. Allie Browne handed out a game-high seven assists.
India Taste led the Yellow Jackets with a double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds). Jasmine Blanton (13) and Jordan Brock (12) also finished in double figures for WVSU.
The Lady Bobcats dominated on the glass, holding a 47-33 advantage. Wesleyan scored 17 second chance points off of 15 offensive rebounds.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with neither team leading by more than six until the Lady Bobcats closed the half with an 8-0 blitz to take a 38-27 lead into the locker room. Danesha Richardson sparked the run with a traditional three-point play.
The lead expanded to 15 points at 46-31 early in the second half following a three from Browne. The Yellow Jackets battled back with a 15-5 sprint to trim the lead to five a 51-46. Wesleyan pulled away with an 8-0 surge to push the lead back to double digits at 65-52 on the way to the 66-56 win.
Wesleyan will now face Fairmont State, the third seed, in Wednesday night's quarterfinal at 8:30 p.m. in the Charleston Civic Center. The Bobcats downed the Lady Falcons, 82-62 in Buckhannon on February 2.
