CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Wesleyan baseball team opened its WVIAC slate with a doubleheader split with Charleston. The Bobcats rolled to an 8-0 win in game one, but fell in game two by a score of 6-3.
Matt Edwards, Ryan Lewicki and Aaron Wiegel each drove in runs with singles in the first to put Wesleyan on top 3-0. J.R. Tenney extended the advantage to 4-0 with a RBI single in the second. Tenney and Nick Jones both chased home runs in the sixth, making the score 6-0. A wild pitch and a RBI single by Dylan Rhodes in the seventh set the 8-0 margin.
Aaron Adams worked the complete game, scattering six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, the Wesleyan offense again started quick with a RBI single by Spencer Webley that put Wesleyan ahead 1-0. UC's Igor Molina responded with a run-scoring double in the bottom half to knot the game at 1-1. Molina's day was just getting started, as he launched a solo blast in the third and a three-run homer in the fifth to put UC in front 5-1. Charleston added one more run in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-1. Rob Stephens notched a RBI single in the sixth and Ryan Lewicki registered a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but Molina's big game was too much for the Bobcats as they fell, 6-3.
Zach Oliver took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in four innings on the hill. Nick Benges yielded two runs on three hits in one-third of an inning. Chris Stein hurled a perfect two-thirds of an inning, and Robert Moneypenny allowed one hit while striking out one during one inning on the mound.
Wesleyan is scheduled to host Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m.
