ATHENS, W.Va.--WVWC defeated Concord University 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Mountain Lion Tennis Center, despite brisk weather conditions.
The Bobcats (5-2) used a dominating sweep of the doubles matches to take an early lead, then rode to wins in 3 of 4 singles matches. The match was stopped after being decided due to the chilly conditions.
Douglas Oliviero, Joel Izquierdo, and Nathan Savill won singles matches for the Bobcats--pushed their WVIAC record to 2-0 leading up to their weekend showdowns with Conference leaders Bluefield State and the University of Charleston.
"We looked pretty sharp in doubles today, which has been what we have focused on most of the past several weeks," said coach Marc Walters. "Aitor and Joel handled a solid #1 doubles team, and Douglas played his best match of the season; all which bode well for us going into tomorrow against the top ranked team in the region."
Walters also noted that his squad, which has played without key veterans for most of the spring, now has everyone ready to compete. "We are finally healthy as a team, so we feel good about the way we are lining up for these key conference matches. It should be fun to see how much progress we have made, as well as what we still need to focus on down the stretch."
Wesleyan will face #37 Bluefield State, the preseason pick to win the conference, on Saturday in Blacksburg, VA at the Hokie Indoor Tennis Center. The match time is scheduled for 5pm.
