Baseball Reaches .500 After Weekend Sweep of Bluefield

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Wesleyan baseball team is now 11-11 after sweeping Bluefield State in a three game series over the weekend.

The Bobcats won Friday's games by scores of 12-6 and 6-2 respectively, and cruised to a 16-5 victory in the series finale on Saturday.

In game one, Spencer Webley worked a bases-loaded walk to put Wesleyan ahead 1-0. Aaron Wiegel made the score 3-0 with a two-RBI single later in the inning. Matt Edwards pushed the score to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second. BSC closed the gap with back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the inning, making the score 4-2. Wesleyan plated a pair of runs in the third, while Tom Brunswick drove home one with a RBI double to push the score to 7-2. Webley chased home a run in the sixth, making the score 8-2. Bluefield State's offense reeled off four runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 8-6. Nick Jones and Edwards each registered RBI singles in the seventh, while Ryan Lewicki put the game away with a two-RBI double to set the 12-6 margin.

Aaron Adams hurled 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking two. Chris Stein picked up the save, tossing a perfect 1.1 innings with one strikeout.

In game two, Edwards began the scoring with a RBI groundout in the game's opening frame. BSC answered with a RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Jones broke the tie with a RBI single in the second. Dylan Rhodes drove in a run in the fourth, while Webley and Corey Lynn each pushed across a run in the fifth, making the score 5-1. The Blues added a RBI double in the bottom of the inning. Wiegel notched the game's final tally with a RBI single in the seventh.    

Zach Oliver worked the complete game, giving up two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.   

On Saturday, Edwards and Wiegel each recorded RBI singles in the first, as well as Wesleyan adding a third run via groundout to take a 3-0 lead. The Blues responded with a pair of home runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3-3. J.R. Tenney put Wesleyan back in front in the third with a solo blast to center. Rhodes, Lewicki and Edwards all drove in runs as part of a four-run fourth inning that extended the advantage to 8-3. BSC's long ball barrage wasn't over, as the Blues got a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning to pull within three at 8-5. WVWC put up two more four spots in the fifth and sixth—highlighted by a two-run bomb from Tenney—to coast to the 16-5 win.

Andrew Ornes tossed the complete game, surrendering five runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Wesleyan is slated to host West Liberty on Tuesday afternoon.
