Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wesleyan softball team wrapped up play in Florida on Friday. The Bobcats dropped a 9-8 decision to Georgian Court, but closed the trip with a 7-6 win over Hillsdale.
Georgian Court 9, West Virginia Wesleyan 8
A first inning error by the Bobcats led to four unearned runs for Georgian Court. Paige Cummings belted a two-run blast in the bottom of the inning to trim the lead to 4-2. Amanda Davis pulled WVWC closer with a RBI in the fourth. Four more Wesleyan errors led to another four spot for GC in the fifth, making the score 8-3. A two-run double by Megan Malenstyn and a two-run bomb by Kaitlyn Carey in the bottom of the inning pulled the Bobcats back within one at 8-7. Cummings chased home a run in the sixth with a double to knot the game at 8-8. A bases-loaded groundout in the seventh pushed Georgian Court to the 9-8 win.
Jessica Griffin (3-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing nine runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work.
West Virginia Wesleyan 7, Hillsdale 6
Cummings and Carey each drove in a run in the first, while Amanda Davis connected on a three-run big fly to make the score 5-0 after one inning. Hillsdale got on the board in the third with a RBI single. Breanna Taylor made the score 6-1 with a RBI single in the fifth. A two-RBI double got Hillsdale within three (6-3). Cummings drove in a run to make the score 7-3. A pair of errors scored three runs for Hillsdale in the sixth, but Wesleyan held on for the 7-6 victory.
Carey surrendered six runs (three earned) on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks over seven innings.
The Bobcats return home before heading to Salem, Va. next Friday where they will play five games.
