Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Fairmont State claimed its first WVIAC softball title in school history with an 8-5 win in game one, but the Bobcats responded with a 10-2 win in the nightcap.
In game one, Jacqui Omichinski roped an RBI double to right in the fifth to give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. FSU answered in the sixth with four runs, keyed by a three-run blast by the Carly Mundie. The Falcons added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-1. The Bobcat bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh as Paige Cummings delivered a RBI single and Kaitlyn Carey followed with a two-run double to pull WVWC within one at 5-4. An FSU error tied the game at 5-5 and sent it into extras. Fairmont State scored three in the eighth and kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard to take the 8-5 win.
Omichinski allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits, with a pair of strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. Jessica Griffin gave up one hit in an inning of work.
In the second game, Fairmont State fired the opening shot with a sacrifice fly in the first. Cummings promptly put Wesleyan on top in the bottom of the inning with a two RBI double. Rebekah Honce doubled home a run and Breanna Taylor singled one home to make the score 4-1 after one inning. Megan Malenstyn plated a pair in the second with a single. FSU scored one in the third, but the Bobcats scored three more in the bottom half to extend the lead to 9-2. Malenstyn sealed the win with a RBI groundout in the fifth.
Kaitlyn Carey hurled five innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out four.
Wesleyan finished the regular season fourth in the conference standings. The Bobcats face Glenville State on Thursday at 12 p.m. in Vienna to open the WVIAC Tournament.
