INSTITUTE, W.Va. –The Wesleyan baseball team dropped a pair of games to divisional rival West Virginia State on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets scored 11 unanswered runs in game one to claim an 11-4 win and belted a three-run walk-off in game two for a 3-2 victory.
In game one, Spencer Webley laced a two-run double to left to put Wesleyan ahead 2-0 in the game's opening frame. An error gave Wesleyan its third run and Tom Brunswick made the score 4-0 with a RBI single. A solo shot by Noah Blackhurst trimmed the deficit to 4-1 after one inning. A pair of two-RBI base hits in the second put WVSU ahead 5-4. Blackhurst put the game away with a grand slam in the sixth, and Anthony Payne belted a two-run shot to propel West Virginia State to the 11-4 win.
Andrew Ornes surrendered 10 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in five innings of work with two strikeouts and three walks. Nick Benges tossed two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on one hit and struck out one. James Gainer hurled the final third of an inning.
In game two, Aaron Wiegel broke through with a two-RBI single in the sixth, giving Wesleyan a 2-0 advantage. The Jackets' Jack Hudson launched a three-run bomb in the seventh to send WVSU home with the 3-2 victory.
Cassey Defibaugh gave up three runs on four hits, while striking out six and walking one, in six plus innings on the mound.
The Bobcats will look to wrap up the weekend series with a win on Sunday.
