INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State completed a weekend sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday with a 19-7 victory.
WVSU jumped out a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Nick Jones cut the deficit to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly in the third. The Jackets put up a six spot in the bottom of the third and continued to score, adding seven more in the fourth to make the score 15-1. J.R. Tenney and Collin Gotham each drove in a run with singles in the fifth. State extended the lead to 19-3. Rob Stephens and Corey Davis each recorded RBI singles in the eighth. Tom Brunswick and Gotham each drove in a run with a groundout to set the score at 19-7.
Nick Benges got the start, but lasted only 2.1 innings, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk. Chris Stein, Robert Moneypenny, Dan Marcine, Seth Corwin, Kyle Chevraunt and James Gainer also saw action on the mound for the Bobcats.
Wesleyan will look to get back on track on Tuesday as they travel to Hawley Field in Morgantown to take on Fairmont State.
